Interpretations of Myth

As the continuous growth of globalization connects countries and cultures across the glob, a communication barrier rooted deep within a countries culture causes a barrier for communal harmony. I believe this inability for opposing cultures to understand one another, relates to a groups understanding of myths. The varying interpretations of a creation myth cause conflict as a result of opposing groups views toward a cosmogony. Cosmogony is a Greek word that I use to refer to the manner in which cultures believe life was created. Another way of viewing the difference in people’s cosmogony can be found in religion. As a result of social inabilities to be accepting of people’s beliefs, or myths, humanities history has been filled with war and conflict over their differences. What many people do not consider is that a creation myth allows people to reconnect with their cultures past and feel connected to one another. While I don't agree with making the world conform to one individual belief, I think that society would function more effectively if we took the time to understand different believes. That is not to say that anyone should believe that, but it would allow for more tolerance amongst each other, regardless of their differences.  When examining creation myths the origin of how life was made varies from different views. The North American Indian’s nine creation myths are usually misunderstood by western cultures who lack the proper interpretation of a myth to truly understand its meaning. Only through a willingness to be open to a cultures specific interpretation of their belief can people begin to learn from one another.
